Varithena Microfoam Vein Treatment Q & A

What is Varithena®?

Varithena® is the only FDA-approved injectable foam used to treat symptoms of varicose veins by destroying the lining of the vein wall, which spurs an inflammatory response that closes the affected vein.

If you suffer from varicose veins, Varithena® can help reduce their appearance as well as provide relief from their symptoms.

What symptoms does Varithena® treat?

Varithena® is an effective treatment for varicose veins and other vein issues. In addition to improving the appearance of varicose veins, it can provide relief for symptoms such as:

  • Heaviness
  • Achiness
  • Swelling
  • Throbbing
  • Itching

How does the Varithena® procedure work?

When you visit Vein Therapy of Atlanta for a Varithena® microfoam vein treatment, Dr. Barnett first numbs the injection site. No incision or anesthesia is necessary.

Guided by an ultrasound, Dr. Barnett then injects the Varithena® microfoam from its specially designed canister into the diseased vein through a small needle or catheter. The microfoam displaces the blood from the vein to treat the vein wall. The diseased vein collapses, and the blood flow is rerouted to healthy veins.

The foam deactivates after the procedure and is safely absorbed into your body.

What can I expect after a Varithena® procedure?

Because the Varithena® procedure doesn't require any incisions or anesthesia and takes less than an hour, it's easy to fit it in on your lunch break.

Following the procedure, we strongly encourage the use of a compression stocking and avoidance of strenuous exercise to promote the best outcome.

You can return to work or most normal activities soon after the procedure; however, you should skip your gym class or any heavy lifting for a couple of weeks.

Side effects include leg pain, discomfort or bruising at the injection site, and blood clots.

You may see sufficient improvement with just one treatment, but Dr. Barnett can determine the number of treatments you need based on the size and number of problem veins during your initial consultation.
