Venaseal Vein Treatment Q & A

What is the VenaSeal closure system?

Nearly 25% of Americans suffer from varicose veins. While some people have only cosmetic symptoms, others experience pain, swelling, throbbing, and itching. VenaSeal is one of the newest nonsurgical treatments for the symptoms of varicose veins.

What happens during a VenaSeal procedure?

Before the procedure, Dr. Barnett injects numbing medicine into the treatment area to minimize pain and discomfort. After a slight needle pinch, you may feel pressure or tugging while Dr. Barnett inserts the catheter and it makes its way into the damaged vein.

Once inserted, the catheter distributes an adhesive agent, sort of like a medical-grade super glue, into the vein to seal it shut — permanently. The blood from the treated vein immediately reroutes to nearby healthy veins.

The glue is medically safe and the procedure only uses a small amount, but what is left over is gradually and safely absorbed into your system.

What can I expect after a VenaSeal procedure?

Dr. Barnett performs the VenaSeal vein treatment at the Vein Therapy of Atlanta office in under an hour. Most people experience few side effects and can return to work or normal activities immediately after the procedure. However, you should skip the gym or any heavy lifting until you get the green light from Dr. Barnett.

After the procedure, you likely won’t need the bothersome compression socks or stockings that are common with other varicose vein treatments. Symptoms such as pain, achiness, swelling, and unsightly veins will usually disappear soon after the problem vein is closed.

How effective is VenaSeal vein treatment?

In clinical trials, 96.8% of veins remained closed 12 months after a VenaSeal vein treatment. Side effects are uncommon and usually minor. Inflammation of the vein is the most commonly reported side effect.
